1960s Fashion with Soul

get-on-up-movie-1960s Did you catch "Get on Up," the James Brown bio movie? The reviews of the slightly abstract film have been mixed, but I really enjoyed it. See it if you are a fan of soul music, and want to see a creative exploration of James Brown's evolution and influence from gospel to funk. "Get on Up" had great acting, and lots of amazing vintage American fashion - from the early 1950s to the powerful styles of the 1970s.  Costume designer Sharen Davis knows retro well - she also worked on soul movie favorites "Dreamgirls" and "Ray." James Brown was known in part for his bold style, but you don't have to throw on a gold cape to recreate some of the awesome looks from this era. james-brown-1960s If you want a retro look with power, Heart of Haute has 1960s styles with big payback. Try our Jenni Dress with puffed and swinging bell sleeves - go go boots and backup dancer moves unfortunately not included. Our Carina Dress has a more structured 1960s shape, and comes in two strong optic prints. You can find the same super bad prints on our Coco Skirt. Our Doreen Dress is another bold 1960s shape - perfect on stage or for dancing to records at home! Don't pay too big of a cost to be the boss - get an American made retro look for less than $100 from Heart of Haute.

First Impression Friday - Kiera Circle Skirt

First Impression Fridays - Kiera Circle Skirt First Impression Friday - Kiera Circle Skirt & Linda Crop Top Kiera Circle Skirt Named after the beautiful lady modeling it in these photos, the Kiera Circle Skirt is the newest addition to the Heart of Haute skirt family!  A true full circle skirt that's wonderfully twirl-able, with the added convenience of pockets!! All honeys love their pockets, making this garment both fashionable and functional! So far the only print this skirt is available in is the adorable 'Chambray Pin Dot Blue', which is one of my favorite prints.  This fabric has the look and feel of an authentic vintage fabric and remains delightfully cute while being very classy as well.  Plus it's a textured polka-dot fabric that's contrasting reverse is just as cute! Be one of the first ladies to snag this crowd-pleasing skirt by shopping here!

First Impression Friday - the Alisa Dress

First Impression Fridays - the Alisa Dress Welcome to the debut of First Impression Fridays! This FIF is on one of our newest dress styles - the Alisa Dress!  This dress is similar to the Aimee Dress, with longer sleeves added to it. Personally I thought this dress wouldn't fit me well because I'm always worried about my arms fitting into long sleeved garments with little stretch - but this dress didn't let me down!  It fits and flatters without being too baggy or too tight in the sleeves, and I just love the sweetheart neckline. [caption id="attachment_2141" align="alignright" width="214"]First Impression Fridays - the Alisa Dress The Alisa Dress in Olive Matrix[/caption] Another way this dress flatters any body type is the a-line skirt and included tie belt.  It cinches the waist in just the perfect way! [caption id="attachment_2143" align="alignright" width="201"]first impression friday - the alisa dress Dinah DeRosa in the Alisa Dress in Olive Matrix / Photo by Mandie Bee[/caption] I know this dress, just like our Mitzi Dress, will be just perfect for the cooler climates or for winter time.  However the Alisa is ever so slightly less modest than the Mitzi, which is fine by me! So far this dress is only available in Olive Matrix, but if you wanna try out the Alisa for yourself, we'll be happy to make you a custom one in any print you like, just send us an email at orders@heartofhaute.com or call us to order via phone at (909) 599-0715. What do you think, honeys?  Do you long for an Alisa of your own?

Late 1960s Fashion with Heart of Haute and Mad Men Season 7

Sunday nights are one of our favorites now that Mad Men is back! Few television shows have had the style impact of Mad Men - from the Banana Republic collections to the ubiquitous Joan Holloway Halloween costumes - Mad Men renewed an interest in retro style.

Mad Men began set in 1960, and the current season of Mad Men is set in 1969. American culture (and clothing styles) changed radically in those 10 years. The cinched waist and full skirt of the 1950s and early 1960s gave way to shift,  A-line, and babydoll dresses with much shorter skirts. Patterns ruled late 1960s and early 1970s fashion, from ethnic boho paisleys too bold mod optic pattern and stripes. Traditional patterns like florals were still around, but they got bolder and more abstract. Colored and patterned tights were popular, and costume jewelry became bigger and brighter, from brooches to earrings.

Dawn Mad Men 1960s tie neck blouse

If you want to rock a hip late 1960s look at work or out on the town, Heart of Haute has the vintage inspired essentials that you need. Our Ruby Dress has an A-line shape and peter pan collar - the Mini Daisy print is a graphic floral that any SCDP employee would love. Our tie-neck Estelle Blouse is an office essential - newly promoted Dawn would approve!
